Lake Rotoiti

It rained all night which made it even more cozy inside our motorhome. It’s still quite cold so to warm up we went for a walk on part of the Te Araroa Trail that I’ll be hiking next year.

This section of the trail alongside the lake is level and easy-going. After a few days it gets steeper as it approaches the Waiau Pass.

Good weather is recommended for the crossing. I hope I time it well otherwise I might have to wait it out for a few days. This area (St. Arnaud’s Lake Rotoiti) will be a highlight of the trail no matter what the weather.

Alongside the jetty we saw a group of eels which looked as though they could have been two meters long and some pretty big fish too. The greatest depth is 82 meters and it is surrounded by beech forest.
